Black Friday Indeed

It is the day after Thanksgiving, 2010. The only difference is that now we get facebook and twitter updates about what we already know-people are standing outside at 4am. A person detached from Western Civilization might ask, why? The answer is simply that there is a lot of stuff on sale. That really doesn't answer it though, because it's so much more to it than that. There is no marked down product that could warrant being trampled to death outside of an elixir for eternal youth. And there isn't anything close to that in these stores. Just the same products peddled all year round for consumers to purchase in order to substitute for affection and purpose. I don't think they even know why they want the stuff. It used to be that people needed products, but the tables have turned. The products need the people.

This is the time to get a head start on Christmas shopping (find the irony), the time of year when consumers play Santa Clause to the merchants. Christmas, that magical time of year where parents instill their kids with their future pathological need to spend beyond their means because it was 50 percent off and had a good warranty. I bet Americans could be convinced to buy Giraffes if it was no money down with fair monthly payments. Yes, tis the season for crushing debt. Stunningly, it's no longer about the haves and the have mores. It's about the haves but want mores. Credit has substituted for the whips and chains of the slave masters and we don't care. As long as we can sit in front of our new 50 inch plasma while wrapped in our Snuggies. Because on Black Friday, savings don't matter. The money you need for next year will be spent at 6 in the morning because everything there is overflowing with artificial value. People are obsessed with getting the latest thing before the other guy so they can garner some sense of accomplishment that is absent in the 9-5 hell hole they dwell in. These advertisers have invented an illness and a cure that the people fall for during every commercial break.

The American consumer is nothing more than a hamster on a wheel that powers its own prison. They don't notice it's a prison because it is so comfortable, so subtle. 'How can this be prison? I've got my 3 in 1 toaster oven, my flatscreen, my high fructose corn syrup, and my Dancing with the Stars?!' They don't see the connection. They assume it's normal to hate your job, assume that the sky high costs of living is that way for a reason, assume that missing a few bills for the sake of a marked down Jet Ski is a safe bet, assume that when cash has run out, credit is the reasonable solution. They have no clue that their materialism is what keeps the lights of the prison on. The instant gratification is what keeps their eyes closed to the oppression around them. But there's no time to think about that. Gotta get to the store before all the BlueRay players run out.
