Carmelo Anthony: a New York State of Mind

December 13th 2010 02:02
Category: No Category

A source has confirmed that NBA superstar Carmelo Anthony will only sign the 65 million dollar contract extension thats been sitting on the table since the summer if he is traded to the New York Knicks. Only in pro sports will a person be picky about how they are given tens of millions of dollars. This puts Denver in an awkward position. If they don't deal Melo, they'll lose him this summer for nothing, like the Raptors and the comically bitter Cavaliers with Chris Bosh and Lebron James respectively. The problem though is that out of all the plausible trade destinations, New York has the least attractive assets. They can offer cap relief in the form of human blob Eddie Curry's 11 million dollar expiring contract, but Denver has stated they want young talent in return as well. What was fairly appealing in the offseason when this scenario got batted around was for the Knicks to deal Danillo Gallinari and Anthony Randolph. But that was before we saw them play. Gallinari has taken a step back from last season and coach Mike D'Antoni would rather check himself into the game than trust Anthony Randolph to play.

Denver fans should have their shoelaces confiscated for saftey reasons after feasting their eyes on this menu of mediocrity: New York has no 1st round picks, 1 decent young guy, 1 washed up fat guy, 1 appalling young guy, and I guess they could throw in cash and a Nintendo Wii.

Bad timing for Melo to decide on New York, if you're in Denver's front office. His sudden decision probably has to do with Amare Stoudemire's scoring barrage and the Knick's having the best record since Clinton was getting felated. Regardless, the Nuggets are screwed and the east is about to get a lot more interesting.

They should have traded him earlier when the Nets offer was still on the table. The formula says that the longer you wait to trade a guy, the less value you will get.

@pro sports, exactly. I was baffled when they didn't pounce on that New Jersey deal. Derrick Favors, AK47, 2 1st round picks, and Melo was willing because the Nets were going to BK and people assumed they wouldn't be terrible this year. Denver really shot themselves in the foot.
