Some know him as Silent Bob, others as the fat guy from the airplane. But make no mistake, Kevin Smith is an artist, that deserves all the acclaim he's gotten. (Even if it's from stoned slackers)
But more could be on the way.
The director of the cult hit Clerks has released a trailer for his new film Red State that has got the internet buzzing. Smith has created a whole new genre, described as political/religious/horror. The film is loosely based on Fred Phelps, the psychotic religious fundamentalist pastor from Kansas. It stars John Goodman, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano and Michael Parks. Here is what Smith had to say about his latest project:
The movie’s called ‘Red State’ and it’s very much about that subject matter, that point of view and that position taken to the absolute extreme. It’s certainly not Phelps himself but it’s very much inspired by a Phelps figure. And to me, too, the notion of using a Phelps-like character as a villain, as horrifying and scary as that guy can be, there’s even something more insidious than him that lurks out there in as much as a public or a government that allows it and that’s the other thing that I’m trying to examine in a big, big way.
Kevin Smith plans to screen it at the Sundance Film Festival. It has yet to receive distribution.
