Grumpy Old Man?

Quincy Jones was recently interviewed by Us Weekly about his career and recent abomination, I mean his Michael Jackson album that is performed by current artists. At one point the interviewer casually stated that Kanye West was comparable to Mr. Jones and asked how he felt about it.

Quincy was none too flattering: How man? No way. Did he write for a symphony orchestra? Does he write for a jazz orchestra? Come on, man. He's just a rapper. There's no comparison. I'm not putting him down or making a judgement or anything, but we come from two different sides of the planet. I spent 28 years learning my first skill. I don't rap. It's not the same thing. A producer has to have some sort of skills that enable him to be a producer. It's totally different to know what to do with 16 woodwinds you know from piccolos down to bass clarinet. It's a whole different mindset. No comparison. None.

When asked how he felt about Kanye, the legend said: I don't think about him much. He's a great rapper, but there are a lot of good rappers. I just did The View with Ludacris, who's one of my favorites. He's a beautiful human being and college educated. I joke with him and say, 'How did 'Move B**h Get Out The Way' come out of you?'

Some delusional pseudo-journalist on a popular hip hop site said that Jones sounded like a "grumpy old man," which made me wish castration upon him. It's like people are allergic to reason. Kanye West isn't in the same galaxy as Quincy Jones. There is a vast difference between being able to chop up samples and throw drum loops on them and being able to put together an orchestra. Recently Irv Gotti said that Nicki Minaj was as talented as Lauryn Hill. Rajon Rondo last year was anointed best point guard in the NBA, people forgot Lebron James was one of the greatest players ever. Scorned voters forgot Obama didn't run as a progressive candidate. People argue with emotion and unfounded opinion. It seems across our culture that everybody is resembling seething old people. The comically racist grandparent at Thanksgiving. Short term memory, no facts, all bluster.

I miss the days when people had some form of taste. There is this instant gratification that makes us cling to the idea of the next big thing and when you think you found it, the hyperbole goes flying. Very little thought goes into anything anymore, particularly entertainment which is still in the Reality TV phase where real life is scripted and portrayed so unrealistically that it becomes fantasy. I can't remember the last time I saw a debate where two sides argued calmly and logically with facts. It seems knowing what you're actually talking about is too inconvenient. Truth is relative and must be delivered in 150 characters or less for fear of being swept away by everybody's microscopic attention spans.

It's bad enough that there are people paid to blow smoke from their rectums, but now with the advances in technology, every idiot has a platform to kill our brain cells with while they pose as experts. Let this be clear, an opinion is YOUR truth. Not THE truth. Everybody has an opinion but everybody isn't entitled to one. If you put no thought or integrity into your ideas then we should not have to be subjected to them. People need to take a giant step back and start speaking to inform, rather than to incite.
