Simple Stuff We Need To Know
October 1st 2006 15:57
Some stuff still baffles me about the differences between men and women. Not anything big, just subtle stuff that reminds us that we are men and women are women. For some of it, there just doesn’t seem to be any real reason behind it. Simple things, like a sense of what colour will work well with another colour. What pants will look good with what shirt. The wardrobe is obviously a constant in some women’s minds, because they can be out shopping and look at something and instantly go "That will go with my frilly blouse". Shopping for blokes isn’t usually like that - it seems that we will see a random article of clothing and just think - "well, it looks good on that mannequin, it will look good on me". This must be why your average bloke has a collection of clothes that seems slightly eclectic.
As you may know, money can’t buy style. Style is a very difficult thing to define, and it’s even harder to teach someone how to make themselves look good or teach them how to buy things that will suit them. But it can be done, or at least you can steer someone in the right direction. And it really doesn't need to cost them a whole lot of money. Simple rules for blokes that most blokes just don’t know can be things as simple as knowing that you shouldn’t wear black with blue. Why? I don’t know. But women know, and that’s all that is important. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “Who cares about all that colour coordinated bullshit?” Well… you should, because the reality is that women really do care about that kind of stuff. That’s actually another reason they like gay man – they are well dressed and take care of their appearance. It’s all about aesthetic pleasure (they like things that look good).
So…how do I keep it as simple as possible for the bloke on a clue budget, who also doesn’t have too much cash? Keep reading and I’ll work it out as we go along. Oscar Wilde said that fashion is a form of ugliness so profound that we have to change it every few months. And yeah, in a way he was right. Luckily, for us blokes, fashions change less rapidly than they do for women, so we can buy something nice now and still be wearing it two years down the track. And it also works for us because we won’t care if a bloke at a party we go to is wearing the same shirt or jeans. Actually, we’ll probably be likely to congratulate him on having good taste!
I reckon we need a little help, and I’m going to seek it out. And I’m going to let you all know what I find out.
