The Dating Project

September 14th 2006 14:31
Internet dating is big business. While some people may still think of it as a last refuge for a lonely loser who couldn't find anyone in the real world, the reality is that for a lot of singles, its a much more comfortable option than battling it out amongst the drunken throngs each weekend in pubs and clubs. There are now a large number of dating websites offering to match people up at a fraction of the cost of a big night out on the town. They have their attractions, such as getting to see a picture of someone and find out a little more about them without actually having to meet them. You can weed out the unsuitable ones without them ever knowing about it, and that in itself is an attractive option.

In an effort to find out which dating sites offer the best value and results, I have boldly taken it upon myself to set up a profile on three different, quite well-known dating websites. They are match.com , rsvp.com.au and lavalife.com.au . Im not here to promote any of them, just to be honest about how well they actually work. Each profile I have set up is similar, in that I am not going to lie about myself to try and get a date, but I have made subtle changes in the way the profile is written in order to see what kind of things get what kind of results. The photo I have attached to each site is different too, so hopefully I won’t be recognised by anyone who uses more than one of the sites. I guess it wont matter too much if I am though.
The point is to find out why people will use a web based or other dating service to find a partner, how successful they are and what has happened to them as a result. Have they had the ultimate success? Have they gone on any horror dates? What prompted them starting to use the websites? Is looking for love on the internet other other organised “dating” environment an overall positive experience? As for today, my profile is active on the three sites, and I await contact with whomever it may bring. I will be sending out “kisses” to various people on the sites – looks/status/age not coming into it. Any contact I receive will be answered positively – yes I am interested, and would like to correspond with you further. Any dates I go on will be reported on, (not critiqued) but anyone I date will be told (on the date, not before) about the project – they will have the option to stay or go if they wish. Either way, I will still be buying them dinner or drinks, and we can have a fun night out anyway. My profiles on each website will be maintained and altered if there is no interest shown – I will report on what I think I was doing wrong with those profiles when it happens. I myself am not looking for love, but I will be keeping an open mind, and I am going to take you all along for the ride.

I want your feedback too, so don't be afraid to get in touch to tell me about any Web-based dating stories you have, whether they are positives or negatives, I want to hear them. Wish me luck – I have a feeling I will need it.
